BOOK ON THE MILITARY ENGINEER JOSÉ CUSTODIO DE SÁ Y FARÍA

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, the Geospatial Solutions company and CEDODAL have published the book “José Custodio de Sá e Faría. Um Engenheiro na América além das fronteiras ”based on an investigation of the works carried out in Portugal, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, by whoever was the most outstanding cartographer of the 18th century in South America. A member of the Boundary Demarcation Parties between Portugal and Spain in America, he was an active protagonist of architecture and planning in the southern region of the continent. Sá e Faría showed enormous scientific and technical capacity in various types of studies and urban and architectural works, participating even in the discovery of the Luján megaterium, a milestone in American paleontology whose results surprised Spain and Europe at the end of the 18th century. The research, which had the support of Brazilian institutions, was carried out by architect doctor Luisa Durán Rocca and architect Ramón Gutiérrez on the basis of existing documentation in the archives of Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. Designed according to the criteria of the CEDODAL “White Series”, this book completes the 50 titles that the institution has produced since 1999. This book is published in Portuguese, showing our commitment to integration and solidarity in the search for what unites us in the idea of the Great Homeland.
